Ah, report card season. Every last item is finally marked, and entered into the online grade book. Time to carefully consider each letter grade, select a 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 for every outcome, and begin the intense program of writing meaningful comments for each student.

What is going through this teacher’s mind?
My Top Ten Wish List for Report Card Writing Teachers, of course!

And what does this report card writing teacher wish for? 

  1. That I collected every assignment, project, notebook and test from each and every student and have it somewhere within reach in case I need to check something.
  2. That my own children will go to sleep immediately at bedtime and stay asleep so I can work.
  3. That the school’s server does not shut down, particularly before I’ve pressed SAVE again.
  4. Chocolate.
  5. That I don’t get sick, nor does anyone else in my family, and if so, that it not be violently ill, but more of a gentle discomfort that I can continue to work through. 
  6. That inspiration will hit and I will write eloquently and precisely with discernment and accuracy.
  7. That God would give me said discernment and insightfulness, and while we are at it, health for myself and my others, and the school’s server….
  8. That all of the other teachers, who are also working late into the night, will not be showing me up by finishing long before I do.
  9. That I will get some type of reward when I am finished, like a steak dinner or fresh baked cinnamon buns…or chocolate.
  10. That my students and their parents will understand and agree with my assessment of each child, and that it will help them in this journey through the middle years.
