Join us in welcoming or welcoming back the following staff to ACS!

ELEMENTARY

Rachel Ajiel: Grade 4 Teacher. Rachel is an experienced and enthusiastic Christian school teacher with a B.A. in Elementary Education and Language Arts, an M.Ed in School Leadership, and Special Education Specialist certification. She and her husband are making the move from Drayton, Ontario to Abbotsford.

Cassidy Barks: Grade 3 Teacher.  Cassidy is passionate about Christian education, building relationships with students, and teaching in elementary. She is currently teaching grade 3 at Surrey Christian School and will enjoy being closer to home next year.

Kayla Ellsworth: Grade 3 Teacher. Kayla is a graduate of the TWU School of Education, class of 2022. She is completing her practicum at MEI and has a natural way of connecting with students and a heart for working with children in a Christian school community. We look forward to welcoming her as she joins the grade 3 team this fall.

Amanda Helm: Grade 2 Teacher.  Amanda will be joining our grade 2 team in a part-time job share position with Gayle Ritsema. Amanda has three children who attend ACS and is currently teaching with Regent Christian Online Academy. Previously she taught at BC Christian Academy as well as at MEI. She looks forward to returning to the classroom.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Tyler Lande: Grade 7 teacher. Tyler comes to us from the Abbotsford School District where he has served as a teacher at Auguston Elementary for last 10 years. Tyler comes with an energy that is contagious, a love for students, and an eagerness to serve as a parent and teacher at ACS. He comes with extensive experience in technology integration and holds a Masters in Education Technology.

Ashton Kelbert: Grade 5 teacher. Ashton is a recent graduate of the TWU School of Education. She has previous experience as an educational assistant and is a certified dance instructor. She has a passion for creating a safe, inclusive, and joyful learning environment for her students. We are excited to have Ashton join our middle school teaching staff this fall.

Kalicia Kelbert: Grade 6 teacher.  Kalicia graduated this year from the TWU School of Education and joins her twin sister, Ashton, as a new middle school teacher. Her past experiences as an educational assistant and dance teacher helped her build valuable skills for her work as a classroom teacher. Seeing student growth and learning gives Kalicia great joy. This fall we look forward to welcoming Kalicia to our middle school team.

Rebecca Shulba: Middle and Secondary Librarian. Rebecca has worked for the last several years as a teacher librarian and tech at Teacher Learning Academy. Prior to that she served as an elementary school teacher at Langley Christian and Agassiz Christian schools. We welcome Rebecca. Her eagerness to cast vision in our innovative Learning Commons is one we are looking forward to next year.

Johanna Spuls: Middle and Secondary Receptionist. Johanna is a lifelong resident of the Fraser Valley and recently completed her Applied Business Technology program at UFV. As an organized and energetic team player, she is excited to begin her work with us at ACS. Join us as we welcome Johanna to this new position this fall.

SECONDARY

Kaitlyn Born: Learning Support Services Coordinator.  Kaitlyn has extensive experience as a Behaviour Consultant and enjoys partnering with families to develop the best learning environment for each child. She recently completed a master’s degree at TWU in Special Education. We look forward to having Kaitlyn share her expertise and her passion for students as she takes on this new role. Welcome, Kaitlyn!

Corlissa Guenette:  Corlissa is graduating from TWU’s PYP (Primary Years Program) program this spring with a math and music minor. She is currently finishing her final practicum at MEI Middle. Corlissa has spent time as a teacher assistant in the TWU mathematics department and is an accomplished violinist. One of the reasons she applied to ACS is our desire to educate through relationship. Welcome Corlissa!

Stephen Jansons:  Stephen will be joining our secondary staff next year. He and his family recently moved from the US (Washington state) and he is currently teaching at Surrey Christian School. He has taught various classes (primarily math) during his time teaching in Washington. He has additional experience with English as a Second Language (ESL), Young Life, and diverse learners. Stephen has also spent time as a director of Young People Ministries and at Bible camps. Stephen is excited to join our team and is looking forward to living and working more closely to family here in Abbotsford.

ADMIN STAFF

Laura Vanderwel: Graphic Designer. Laura is an experienced graphic designer who has worked alongside our advancement team for a number of years as a contractor. Laura will be joining the ACS staff in a small part-time role assisting with design, print materials, digital applications, and social media. Laura and her husband, Dwayne, have two children, the oldest of which begins kindergarten at ACS this September. Laura is also an ACS alumni and is excited to come back to the school in this new role.

Moving/changing positions within ACS

Tym Berger: Director of Operations. In April 2022, Tym accepted a new position at the school: Director of Operations (formerly known as Director of Facilities) after being middle school principal for the past 13 years. We are, of course, thrilled that Tym took on this new role, but we also recognize the many years of service to ACS that Tym has provided leadership at the middle school level and he is leaving behind a huge role and responsibility.

Mike Cumiskey: Middle School Principal. We are excited to announce the hiring of Mike Cumiskey as the new principal of our middle school campus, beginning September 1, 2022. Mike has been a vice principal at our secondary campus since 2017 and has taught science and leadership courses at ACS since he began here in 2015.We look forward to his leadership in this capacity! Please join us in welcoming Mike to his new role as middle school principal.

Goodbyes

We are sad to say goodbye to the following staff members; join us in thanking everyone below for their many contributions to our ACS community! We have been blessed by them and we pray for God’s direction, protection, and blessing as they move on to a new season of their life.

ELEMENTARY

Ashleigh Esau: Educational Assistant. Ashleigh joined the EA team in January and supported students in various elementary classrooms. We wish you God’s blessings in your future plans.

Corinna Fair: Grade 1 Teacher. Corinna was a wonderful addition to our grade 1 team this year. She will be missed as she makes the move to Lethbridge, Alberta this summer after she gets married. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, Corinna!

Charis Millard: Grade 3 Teacher. Charis started at ACS teaching grade 1 in 2017. Her strong classroom management skills and dedication to academic rigor was an asset in grade 1 and later in grade 3. Although she is choosing not to return, she is leaving behind a beautiful legacy because of her deeper learning project that provided our playground with new planter boxes. Thank you, Charis, and blessings on what’s next. 

Hannah Schmidt: Grade 4 Teacher. Hannah has taught grade 4 for the past two years at ACS, and she is now moving on to explore her passions outside of the elementary classroom. Her energy and enthusiasm will be missed but we’re excited to see where God leads her next.

Natalie Schouten Van Laar: Preschool Teacher. Natalie was on maternity/parental leave this year and she has decided to stay home full-time. We will miss her in our preschool program but wish her joy and happiness. She looks forward to eventually returning to ACS as a parent.

Donna Stark: Educational Assistant. Donna is retiring this year after working tirelessly as an educational assistant in many of our elementary classes since 2011. We will miss Donna and we hope that we will still see Donna around here as a sub for years to come.

Elizabeth Stewart: Grade 3 Teacher. Elizabeth joined ACS as an UP Teacher and later switched to the grade 3 team. After 5 years at ACS, she’s decided it’s time to bring her gifts for teaching and her growing interest in helping marginalized students to one of our local public schools. We wish her well and know that God will use her to be a blessing to others.

Jordanna Tibbett: Educational Assistant. Jordanna worked part-time in various classrooms supporting students. We wish her God’s blessings next year.

Bethany Van Kampen: Educational Assistant. While we rejoice with Bethany and her husband that they are welcoming baby #1 into their family in September, we will also miss her work as an educational assistant at the elementary campus while she is on maternity leave.

MIDDLE

Linda Howard: Receptionist. Linda served as the middle school administrative assistant and more recently, as receptionist for the past eight years. She is feeling God calling her elsewhere to use her gifts to serve him. We are grateful for her service, love and care for our students and staff, and wish her the best in her future endeavors.

Maury Thiessen: Grade 5 Teacher.  Maury is retiring this year after 34 years at ACS. He has been a passionate educator, always striving to teach students what it means to be a faithful Christ follower in all areas of life. His sense of humour, classroom “critter” zoo, love of science, and dedication to ACS will be missed greatly! We pray that God continues to bless Maury as he begins this next exciting new chapter.

Esther Vuong: Educational Assistant. Esther has served as an educational assistant at the middle campus for 6 years and has been a real blessing to the middle school community. We will miss her passion for her students and her many contributions to the development of our LSS program. We pray that God will bless her as she seeks to use these gifts in a different setting next year.

SECONDARY

Kim Chapdelaine: Educational Assistant. Kim has decided to move on to something else. It’s not quite retirement… but something different that God has in store for her. May the Lord bless you Kim as you pursue what God has in store next for you.

Laura Franckiewicz: Educational Assistant. Laura has decided to retire at the end of this year after 12 years of faithful service at this place she calls her “mission field.” She is excited about the next chapter in her calling, in which she desires to bring Christ’s joy and love to the elderly in nursing homes and to newborns in the neonatal nursery of the hospital.  We are grateful for all Laura has given to our school and wish her God’s richest blessings as she seeks to serve Him as she moves on from this place.

Pam Jenks: Science Teacher.  Pam and her family have made the decision to move east to Alberta. Being closer to family is something they’re all very excited for. Blessings on Pam and her family as they connect with new schools and communities next year!

Hieke Morton: Foods Teacher.  Hieke is leaving us to follow her calling to serve at the Gathering Markit full time. We wish her God’s richest blessing as she continues to faithfully serve Him in this capacity.

Rhonda Parley: Educational Assistant. Rhonda is looking forward to doing some traveling and spending time with her family next year. But she hopes to stop by next year as a TOC. Richest blessings on your plans, Rhonda!

Keith & Jackie Stewart: Keith, our technical education teacher, and Jackie, an educational assistant, are retiring and their immediate plans involve a direct flight to Australia to visit family as this hasn’t been possible at all during the pandemic. They have both given so much to ACS over the many years during their tenure here. We are deeply grateful for them and wish them God’s richest blessing as they begin a new chapter together.

Karen Wilson: Library Technician. Karen has decided that this is her last year at ACS. She has a number of new opportunities that she is pursuing and getting more involved in the community at large in Abbotsford. We’re grateful for the ways that Karen encouraged reading in our students and all her work and leadership in the transition to our new library spaces.
