X-BLOCK SESSION 3: Health & Safety

The second session of X-Blocks runs on April 7, 14, 21, May 5! This module is about health, safety, and general well-being. How can we care for ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually?

Most village and slum dwellers in Kenya are too poor to purchase the expensive toys and devices the middle class and the wealthy citizens afford to buy for their children. The children in the slums and villages make up games utilizing rocks and scrape items that are readily available in their compounds, to create wonderful and fun activities.

Are you ready to babysit, or prove to your parents you are of age to stay home alone and care for your siblings while they take in a movie? Take the Red Cross Babysitting Course and learn the basics of babysitting responsibilities.  This course will cover being a responsible leader, characteristics and behaviours of children, creating a safe environment when caring for children, First Aid and babysitting business.

Pilates is a wonderful form of exercise that focuses on using and strengthening the core of our bodies. Muscle strength develops through low-impact movements, making this an enjoyable class for anyone of any fitness level. Students will most likely grow in their physical flexibility each week and can expect to break a sweat…in an enjoyable way! This class will celebrate our God-given bodies, with a desire and focus of strengthening these bodies for His purposes. Students can expect to come and be encouraged in mind and body. Equipment needed is comfortable clothing, a yoga or fitness mat, and a water bottle. Come join in a safe, non-judgemental, encouraging way to exercise Pilates!

No dance experience needed! Boys and girls needed! Come out and learn how to swing dance, one of life’s most important skills. We will learn East Coast swing and Charleston, finishing up with a most incredible routine.

Do you love games? Come on out and learn some new games that you can play in a group!  Learn problem solving strategies and game etiquette!

Learn about game design, play virtual, and board games. Discover what makes games good and bad and how we can play them responsibly.

Wondering what to do in an emergency? Learn about basic crash dynamics and safety in vehicles and on school busses. What happens in a crash and what are ways we can protect ourselves from being seriously injured?   (Hint: it’s not bubble wrap!) Part two of this session will teach some first aid skills to help you deal with an emergency. Topics may include choking in adult and child, RICE and dressing wounds, how to call for help and survey an emergency, ABC assessment. 

Be prepared for a variety of emergencies!

In this class, we will learn how to resolve conflict God’s way. Through looking at our hearts and choices, we will develop Godly character to deal with conflict and discover the skills to manage future conflict well. These strategies will help bring peace and stability to our relationships and honor God in the process.

Come and serve with the Abbotsford Nature Society at Willband Creek. Monitor nest boxes, look for invasive species and help keep this space a beautiful part of Abbotsford.

Do you love competition?  Do you love strategy? Do you have “moves?”  Come and learn about the “moves” necessary to play chess!  Strategize and learn the roles of the King, Queen, Knights and Bishop in the board game, Chess!

What does it mean to be an adolescent male in God’s world?  What does society expect from us?  Who does God call us to be?  Come examine godly examples of men in the Bible, learn some of the basic life skills that every dude should know all the while examining God’s call for us to be His disciples.

Come out and enjoy God’s spectacular creation and each other’s company as we reach new heights together. Learn how to be safe when hiking and learn to push yourself hard and sweat it out!  We will be hiking Stoney Creek, Ledgeview Trail, Abby Grind, and Sumas Mountain.  

Parent drivers and chaperones will be needed!

Boys and girls are both welcome in this course that will focus on good running and fitness habits! Together we will train toward the goal of running 4 km together! You will also build strength and endurance for everyday physical fitness!

Do you have a flair for Drama? Come fine-tune your skills through lessons in mime and improv, movement and speech, character development, and staging. The class will culminate with the presentation of scripted scenes.
