Big smiles spread across the students\u2019 faces as they scurry to different learning pods set up across the Learning Commons.<\/p>\n<p>To say this space is a hit would be an understatement.\u00a0 It has become the hub of activity for our middle school students.<\/p>\n<p>We know many of our community members have not had the opportunity to see this amazing space, but, as a teacher, and as one of the Learning Commons Coordinators, the atmosphere feels like <span style=\"color: #266093;\"><strong>a school version of a favourite coffee shop, filled with connoisseurs of learning. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So let me share with you some of the reasons our middle school students love the Learning Commons:<\/p>\n<h2>Grade 5\u2019s LOVE:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>that they can play Jenga during their break times.<\/li>\n<li>the stage.<\/li>\n<li>the chapels we can host in this space.<\/li>\n<li>that they can go there during their breaks to draw.<\/li>\n<li>that they have a place where they can be creative with their friends.<\/li>\n<li>that<span style=\"color: #266093;\"><strong> it is a place where I can learn AND be social.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>there is a Caf\u00e9 where we can buy things.<\/li>\n<li>there is so much space to learn.<\/li>\n<li>the fancy lights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Grade 6\u2019s LOVE:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>that they are the first OFFICIAL Presentation of Learning to take place in this space. This week they presented their Fractured Fairy Tales and parents were invited to be their AUDIENCE.<\/li>\n<li>it is quiet in there but I can still easily talk with my friends when we play games and respect others who are working.<\/li>\n<li>that it is a relaxing space.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #266093;\"><strong>the sunlight that shines in on us.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>the \u2018sign on the wall.\u2019 It is our mission statement and reminds us of our purpose.<\/li>\n<li>how we can switch it from comfortable seating to chapel seating.<\/li>\n<li>the donuts and hot chocolate.<\/li>\n<li>Italian sodas and all the flavours we can try.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Grade 7\u2019s LOVE:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>the layout and the chairs; it is open and feels welcoming.<\/li>\n<li>that it feels unusually comfortable for a school.<\/li>\n<li>the big windows.<\/li>\n<li>the window seats<\/li>\n<li>that the Learning Commons was open to all students to watch the Olympics during their break and lunch.<\/li>\n<li>how there is often soft music playing in the background.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #266093;\">that \u201cI can help younger students and play cards with them.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>that my friends and peers work at the Caf\u00e9.<\/li>\n<li>Mr. and Mrs. Kowalchuk: our Volunteer Caf\u00e9 Coordinators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Grade 8\u2019s LOVE:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #266093;\"><strong>the design\u2014it doesn\u2019t feel like a school.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>that it is a great space for us to play &#8220;Apples to Apples&#8221; at lunch.<\/li>\n<li>It provides a space for the sound team to practice their skills and to practice and learn how to use technology.<\/li>\n<li>that I can attend chapel at school and church on Sunday in the same space.<\/li>\n<li>it\u2019s a great place for our Worship Team to lead others in worship.<\/li>\n<li>it makes us feel sophisticated.<\/li>\n<li>it has brought a lot of community.<\/li>\n<li>the library is open and easy to access; it is welcoming.<\/li>\n<li>the big windows and being able to see God\u2019s creation outside.<\/li>\n<li>Apple fritters and nachos and cheese from the Cafe.<\/li>\n<li>comfortable couches<\/li>\n<li>it feels peaceful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Watching students utilize this space is a joy. And this is just the beginning.
