It felt like a brand new school year began in April. We all stretched ourselves in many ways! Thinking of an entirely new way of doing school, connecting with our students virtually, and discovering that we are more flexible and gracious than we ever thought we could be, and through it all, we see God\u2019s grace and goodness shine through.<\/p>\n<p>We know that students are not the only ones learning at school! In fact, when we checked in with the middle school staff to find out what Connected Learning has been like, here is what they shared:<\/p>\n<h1>TOP <del>10<\/del> 21 THINGS WE LEARNED THROUGH CONNECTED LEARNING<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #ffffff; background-color: #c72263;\">1.<\/span> I learned how much I love seeing the students every day and have missed them every single day of this crazy time that they haven\u2019t been at school! <em>Linda Howard<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff; font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"background-color: #c72263;\">2<\/span>.<\/span> You can teach an old dog new tricks. <em>Tym Berger<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">3.<\/span>\u00a0 I learned <span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>I can eat a burrito and do yoga in the middle of a zoom meeting.<\/strong><\/span> <em>Heidi Siebenga<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">4.<\/span> I have learned how to mute my colleague when she is talking on the phone during a class Zoom meeting. I still need to learn how to turn her video off.\u00a0 <em>Jonathan Zuidhof<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263;\">5<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263;\">.<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #363839;\"> I learned that I am in the right profession! This time of Connected Learning has shown me that I am meant to work with kids. I have struggled with loneliness and motivation at home\u2014just like so many others, including our students! The moments that I am able to connect with a student through video or at school in a socially distant classroom has brought me SO much joy and fulfillment. Being in relationship is so much greater than being attached to my computer and other forms of technology. <em>Deanna Warkentin<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">6.<\/span>\u00a0 When filming videos of talent, science, etc., make sure you aren\u2019t drinking Diet Coke out of your glassware that says Guinness on the side. <em>Sandra Barthel<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">7.<\/span> I learned that our ACS community is even more amazing than I ever could have thought! <em>Linda Howard<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">8.<\/span> Technology is fantastic when it works\u2014but when it doesn\u2019t\u2026YIKES! <em>Karin Hoogland<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff; font-size: 18pt;\">9. <\/span>I learned that the trials, difficulties, and struggles I have faced in my past, God has used to prepare and equip me to be strong during this time and be able to support and encourage others! <em>Linda Howard<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">10.<\/span> SO, I recently learned that <strong><span style=\"color: #266092;\">my class has a private class chat called the \u201cVerbeekians.<\/span><\/strong>\u201d <em>Dan Verbeek<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff; font-size: 18pt;\">11.<\/span> I learned even more about how talented the students in 6B are! Some of their gifts that I\u2019ve noticed through Connected Learning include drawing, mountain biking, completing trick shots, making videos, baking, creating cozy reading corners, dancing, photography, playing basketball, using technology to connect and learn, horseback riding, walking on their hands, writing funny stories, and encouraging others! <em>Amy Morrow<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">12.<\/span> I learned that <span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>God has created us all with such amazing capacity to be resourceful and creative and to think outside the box<\/strong><\/span>\u2014and find brand new ways to do all of the wonderful things that happen here at ACS! <em>Linda Howard<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">13.<\/span> Connected learning was \u201cthe bomb\u201d for some (good thing) and \u201ca bomb\u201d for others (not so good). <em>Karin Hoogland<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">14.<\/span> While I am quite okay with using technology and enjoy trying out new things, it is clear that I am not well-designed for teaching without the day-to-day spontaneity of face-to face-interactions with students. <em>Sally Van Geest <\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: #c72263; font-size: 18pt; color: #ffffff;\">15.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #363839;\"> Creative Connected Learning Haiku poetry. <em>Sally Van Geest<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Connected Learning<br \/>\nScreens taking over my life<br \/>\nI miss my students<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff; font-size: 18pt;\">16.<\/span>Despite being a teacher and a parent, I learned cannot teach my own child. <em>Sandra Barthel<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">17.<\/span> I learned that it\u2019s important to be able to laugh at yourself when you become frozen during a meeting with a not-so-flattering expression on your face. \u201c<span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>Miss Warkentin, you look like you\u2019re about to sneeze!<\/strong><\/span>\u201d<em> Deanna Warkentin<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">18.<\/span> I learned that our ACS staff are all even more amazing than I ever could have thought! <em>Linda Howard<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">19.<\/span> I learned when using your daughter&#8217;s room for virtual class meetings that it&#8217;s a good idea to clean up the stuffies on the bed behind you. <em>Kristin Schut<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">20.<\/span> I learned I am NOT smarter than a seventh grader. <em>Trina Lambert<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; background-color: #c72263; color: #ffffff;\">21.<\/span>\u00a0 I learned to make sure you check what\u2019s on the clothes drying rack beside you prior to your online meeting. <em>Dan Verbeek<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STAFF What a year!
