One of my daughters wanted to be a mermaid when she grew up\u2026. At some point along the way, usually in high school, the question remains but changes ever so slightly\u2026. \u201c<em>What are you going to do after you graduate?<\/em>\u201d Now this isn\u2019t just a fun question any more. For some, it can be a paralyzing thought. I can tell you that <span style=\"color: #266092\"><strong>being a principal wasn\u2019t even in the realm of possibility when I graduated from high school<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve had several \u201ccareers\u201d along the way. Here\u2019s the run down as far as I can recount:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Newspaper carrier<\/li>\n<li>Custodian<\/li>\n<li>Greenhouse labourer<\/li>\n<li>Fruit tree nursery labourer<\/li>\n<li>Turf care service provider<\/li>\n<li>Tutor (when I fell in love with teaching)<\/li>\n<li>Data processor (my friends called me a transponster)<\/li>\n<li>Teacher<\/li>\n<li>Body removal agent (coroner service)<\/li>\n<li>Chairperson of the InspirED convention<\/li>\n<li>Director of the PBL Residency<\/li>\n<li>Vice Principal<\/li>\n<li>Principal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But I\u2019m much more than the sum of my careers.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, a child of God. I\u2019m a leader, I collaborate, I listen, I plan, I organize, I support, and the list goes on.<\/p>\n<h2>Gifts, Passions, and More\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>This year marks a significant change to the Career Education program in British Columbia. <span style=\"color: #266092\"><strong>At ACS we have the opportunity to help our students begin exploring their God-given gifts, their passions, their skills, and how all of these things connect to their life outside the walls of ACS.<\/strong><\/span> As a school that seeks to engage minds, nurture hearts, and shape God\u2019s world, our career education must be much more than just \u201cwhat are you going to do after you graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allow me to share a little bit about what\u2019s in store:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>New Courses: <\/strong>Career Life Education (grades 9-10) and Career Life Connections (grades 11-12). Students will spend time engaging in career education every year during their time at ACS Secondary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mentorship: <\/strong>Students will work with teachers in small groups to provide time and space to engage in conversations about how God has blessed them and how they can utilize their gifts and passions outside of ACS.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focuses: <\/strong>Each grade level will have a guiding question for their year:<br \/>\nGrade 9:\u00a0 Who am I and what are my passions?<br \/>\nGrade 10:\u00a0 What career opportunities are out there?<br \/>\nGrade 11:\u00a0 What can I explore to help me continue my career-life journey?<br \/>\nGrade 12:\u00a0 How can I best prepare myself for what next year might look like?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication: <\/strong>We\u2019re committed to communicating with our secondary parents as this new program unfolds. Look for regular emails keeping you up-to-date with what\u2019s been happening in Career Education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Staff: <\/strong>Our staff are all engaging in this as they know how important career education is in the lives of our students.
