I do wonder what he was doing that was so bad as to warrant such punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward 75 years.<\/p>\n<p>I have been supporting Mrs. Barthel in band class. This one particular class had a few students who really liked to <span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>play their instruments <em>sabotagingly<\/em> loud<\/strong>.<\/span> Enough was enough, and &#8220;Gus&#8221; was sent into the hall.<\/p>\n<p>As Mrs. Barthel kept on teaching, it was my job to try to get this student to cooperate. As a staff, we had just read the little blue book about restorative practices, and I thought I\u2019d give it a try.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #00bcd3;\">Let\u2019s Have a Chat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>What happened in band class?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>Really?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>I hate band.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: <em>\u201cBut you\u2019re good at it. What did you do that bugged Mrs. Barthel?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>Played like really loud. But so were the other guys.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>What were you thinking at the time you were doing that?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: <em>\u201cI dunno. It was kind of funny. I just wanted out of band.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>Who do you think was affected by what you did?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>Mrs. Barthel.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>And?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>What do you mean?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>Do you think you just affected the teacher? Was anyone else affected by what you were doing?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>Yeah, the class.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: <em>\u201cSo, what are you going to do to make things right?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gus: \u201c<em>Say sorry.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201c<em>And?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #00bcd3;\">Let\u2019s Make Things Right <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our conversation lasted about 15 minutes, and Gus really had a difficult time answering the question about making things right. I gave him some time to think on it, and I came back to talk with him. He still didn\u2019t know what he should do, so I left him to think again. The third time I asked what he was going to do to make things right, he started crying, and said, \u201c<em>Can\u2019t you just punish me?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the end, Gus did make things right with his teacher and his peers. He really did change his behaviour in class and in the halls. <span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>He seemed to know that we were on his side.<\/strong><\/span> There was no need to isolate him, to give him detentions, to yell, to throw chalk, or even to give him the strap 27 times.<\/p>\n<p>Gus was a part of us.<\/p>\n<h2>Let\u2019s Love and Struggle<\/h2>\n<p>The \u201cgood ol\u2019 days of discipline\u201d\u2026well, maybe they weren\u2019t so good. Dunce caps in the corner, chalk-throwing, line-writing, screaming, my way or the highway, maniacal measures were really about shame.<\/p>\n<p>We now know better, right?<\/p>\n<p>We are called to love; to be in right relationship; to reconcile. <span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>And yet we struggle.<\/strong><\/span> We do that which expedites quiet \u2013 the appearance of respect. Our struggle as teachers and parents is in answering the questions: \u201c<em>How does punishment make things right again? How does it repair broken relationships?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the next few weeks, I will be posting a series of notes which will attempt to demonstrate how teachers at ACS are trying to implement restorative practices in our classrooms.
