Sometimes, this can lead to interesting conversations with students:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student:<\/strong> \u201c<em>Hi, Mrs. Groot, I\u2019m looking for a book you showed us last week.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Me (excited):<\/strong> \u201c<em>Sure! What\u2019s it called?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Student:<\/strong> \u201c<em>I don\u2019t know, but the cover is yellow.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Me (surprised):<\/strong> <em>\u201cYellow? Well, do you remember what it\u2019s about? Or the name of the author?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Student:<\/strong> <em>\u201cUm, not really.<\/em> (Thinks for a minute, then brightens) <em>Oh! I think it\u2019s about a dog!\u201d <\/em>Smiles sweetly and looks at me with great expectation.<br \/>\n<strong>Me:<\/strong> (groaning inwardly, as we have 715 books on dogs)<em> \u201cUm, okay, let\u2019s take a look at what books we have about dogs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And so the quest for the yellow book about a dog begins\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #00bcd3;\">I Love Reading<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I read every day. It\u2019s one of my favourite ways to relax after a busy day. Or a slow day, or a rainy day, or on a holiday. Actually, I don\u2019t even need a reason. To me, there\u2019s nothing like settling down with a good book to take my mind off life for a while. I feel anxious if I\u2019m almost done a book and don\u2019t have another one handy, and I panic if the public library closes before I can get there. Some people swap recipes; I swap book recommendations. <span style=\"color: #266092;\"><strong>I am excited when boxes of new books arrive for the library; it\u2019s better than Christmas<\/strong><\/span>, because I know I won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>So, I am very blessed to be a teacher-librarian at ACS Elementary. Every day I am surrounded by books\u2014picture books, graphic novels, novels, and non-fiction. To me, it is a little bit of heaven. And I get to share my love of books and passion for reading with all the students, trying to get them as excited about books as I am.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #00bcd3;\">There\u2019s Nothing Good to Read!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Probably the most distressing phrase a student can utter in the library is \u201cthere\u2019s nothing good to read!\u201d <strong><span style=\"color: #266092;\">To me, that\u2019s like walking into Purdy\u2019s Chocolates and announcing there\u2019s nothing good to eat.<\/span> <\/strong>At ACS, we are so blessed to have an administration that supports literacy by providing a budget to buy good, quality literature. At the elementary campus, there are over 24,000 items in the library collection; almost all of these are children\u2019s books, on every topic, and at every reading level.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #00bcd3;\">Take Me to Your Reader<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our library plays a central role in encouraging and improving student literacy, as well as being a resource center for students, staff and parents. <strong><span style=\"color: #266092;\">One of the main goals of the library is to connect readers to books.<\/span><\/strong> When a student laments \u201cthere\u2019s nothing good to read,\u201d to me, it means that they haven\u2019t found a book or series that they have connected with. As librarians, we take this challenge very seriously. We talk with the student to find out their interests, their reading level, and to help them find a \u201cjust right book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last June, a grade 5 student lamented the fact that he wasn\u2019t ready for middle school because he hadn\u2019t read all the books in the elementary library yet.<\/p>\n<p>Mission accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>Read anything good lately?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY LINDA GROOT, ELEMENTARY TEACHER LIBRARIAN I like to regularly highlight new titles with my library classes to help create student interest in reading.
