{"id":384,"date":"2014-05-14T07:37:03","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T14:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/insideout.insidewp.test\/?p=384"},"modified":"2014-05-14T07:37:03","modified_gmt":"2014-05-14T14:37:03","slug":"facetime-faux-pas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abbotsfordchristian.com\/insideout\/2014\/05\/14\/facetime-faux-pas\/","title":{"rendered":"FaceTime Faux-Pas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">I know it\u2019s not very lady-like, but sometimes I burp. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It probably wasn&#8217;t the best time to let go of one of those big bellywonkers, but it happened right as I walked into my daughter\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #236192\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Me: <em>&#8220;B<\/em><\/span><em>raack\u2026<\/em><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\"><span style=\"color: #236192\"><em>whatcha doing?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #3eb1c8\">A: <em>&#8220;My homework\u2026and, say hi to Zoe.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #236192\">Me: (recoiling in shame) <em>&#8220;When did Zoe get here?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3eb1c8\">A: <em>&#8220;She\u2019s on my FaceTime, Mom.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #236192\">Me: \u00a0<em>&#8220;Oh, hi. \u00a0Uhem<em>\u2026<\/em>excuse me.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Oh FaceTime<em>\u2026<\/em>I have a love-hate relationship with you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">On one hand I am thankful for this technology\u2014it helps me stay in contact with friends and family on the other side of the world. I can celebrate birthdays in Hong Kong and get recipes from my sister in Germany all from the comfort of my living room. My world is small. My family is close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">And then there\u2019s times like those above when I do not like sharing my house with people who are not physically there. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Remember the time when we\u2019d have to get homework help from our friend at the other end of our rotary-dial phone where the cord was attached to the wall? We had to hide under the basement stairs in order to get any privacy from our little brother. Now, if you don\u2019t have\u00a0<\/span>WiFi<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">, you\u2019re just odd or old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">So, how does a parent respond to this rapid change and our obsession with technology?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Here\u2019s a few things that\u00a0<\/span>we&#8217;ve<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">\u00a0set in place in our family:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We&#8217;ve set limits on the amount of time our kids can spend on screens. We have one day set aside as \u201cscreen-free\u201d and it must be adhered to by all members of the family. If you really MUST watch that gold-medal hockey game on Sunday, you have to ask permission from the rest of the family and plead your case.<\/li>\n<li>All techno gadgets are to be on the kitchen counter or in their charger by 8:30 pm. But, what is right is not always popular. I am my kids\u2019 parent, not their best friend. I take this responsibility very seriously. It is my job to protect them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">But, how can we protect our kids without completely cutting them off? I think that&#8217;s the biggest question of all. You might say it even goes with the calling to be \u201cin the world but not of the world.\u201d By the grace of God, we hope to provide a home environment that views technology as <\/span><em>one<\/em> <span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">way to communicate and not the <\/span><em>only <\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">way. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From now on, you can be sure that I\u2019ll be asking if she\u2019s FaceTime-ing before I burst into her room.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know it\u2019s not very lady-like, but sometimes I burp. \u00a0 It probably wasn&#8217;t the best time to let go of one of those big bellywonkers, but it happened right as I walked into my daughter\u2019s room.
