{"id":1533,"date":"2015-04-24T09:01:03","date_gmt":"2015-04-24T09:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/insideout.insidewp.test\/?p=1533"},"modified":"2015-04-24T09:01:03","modified_gmt":"2015-04-24T09:01:03","slug":"spam-haiku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abbotsfordchristian.com\/insideout\/2015\/04\/24\/spam-haiku\/","title":{"rendered":"SPAM Haiku"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 1996, I had an idea.\u00a0I think this idea was somehow inspired by my high school friend, Robin and by the latest advance in communication\u2014email. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The idea: SPAM\u00ae haiku.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had 34, what we now call, contacts. They included Robin, of course, several university friends, and my colleagues at Abbotsford Christian School. I sent them all an email soliciting haiku poems on the subject of SPAM. I mean the &#8220;meat&#8221; that comes in the blue can, not the unwanted messages that inundate your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Noot was, at first, reticent:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>SPAM haiku you say?<br \/><\/em><em>What a total waste of time<br \/><\/em><em>U<\/em><em>seless stewardship<br \/><\/em>EN<\/p>\n<p>Robin submitted this poem on SPAM origins:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>A G.I.&#8217;s glad feast<br \/><\/em><em>Legacy of World War Two<br \/><\/em><em>Like the atom bomb<br \/><\/em>RH<\/p>\n<p>Ed Noot and I were on the same wavelength with these:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Ultra preserved slabs<br \/><\/em><em>Of petrified pork and stuff<br \/><\/em><em>Last for a decade<br \/><\/em>EN<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Found at future dig<br \/><\/em><em>Pink cube, icon of lost age<br \/><\/em><em>Unexpected lunch<br \/><\/em>TDJ<\/p>\n<p>My dear friend from university, MaryLou, must have been thinking of SPAM continuously, because she wrote so many. Here are two samples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>I gravely wonder,<\/em><br \/><em>What type of meat comes in cans?<\/em><br \/><em>Ambivalence grows<\/em><br \/>ML<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Magnificent SPAM.<br \/><\/em><em>Hidden from sight by can.<br \/><\/em><em>Oh, hidden temptress.<br \/><\/em>ML<\/p>\n<p>Many of the poems were about the <strong><span style=\"color: #005693\">mysterious ingredients<\/span><\/strong> in SPAM. This one comes from Henry, who is currently working at Langley Christian School:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Juicy pink mouthful<\/em><br \/><em>Gelatinous viscera<\/em><br \/><em>Red dye number 6<\/em><br \/>HV<\/p>\n<p>Some of my favourite contributions lead to <strong><span style=\"color: #005693\">more philosophical speculations<\/span><\/strong>. This one came from Ken, my friend and pastor at the time:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Spamming horizons<\/em><br \/><em>Considering our life spam<\/em><br \/><em>Giving SPAM away<\/em><br \/>KB<\/p>\n<p>Another from MaryLou, this haiku <strong><span style=\"color: #005693\">smells of cultural commentary<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>SPAM allegory<\/em><br \/><em>It&#8217;s the pig&#8217;s part melting pot<\/em><br \/><em>Unremarkable<\/em><br \/>ML\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roy Van Eerden thought:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>It can&#8217;t be all bad<\/em><br \/><em>After all Costco sells it<\/em><br \/><em>Three for five eighty nine<\/em><br \/>RV<\/p>\n<p>This is a Mike Bakker contribution:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>An offering pink<\/em><br \/><em>Given but not welcoming<\/em><br \/><em>Smirks at our unease<\/em><br \/>MB<\/p>\n<p>I think this was written by former colleagues, Jeannette Berkenbosch and Karen Van Egmond:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Smooth and jellied meat<\/em><br \/><em>Slides down my esophagus<\/em><br \/><em>And back up again<\/em><br \/>J&amp;K<\/p>\n<p>I have attempted to relive the magic of the SPAM Haiku Email Project in my English 12 class with some success.
